What is deep teeth cleaning?

Ventura deep teeth cleaning focuses on removing bacteria, plaque, and tartar located below your gum line on your tooth roots; a normal teeth cleaning removes buildup that’s above the gum line. A deep teeth cleaning is also known as dental scaling and root planing. You might need a deep cleaning throughout your entire mouth or in a few localized areas. We may split a full-mouth deep cleaning into two to four appointments.

Preparing for Deep Teeth Cleaning

We use a local anesthetic to make sure you’re comfortable during your Ventura deep teeth cleaning.

The process for Deep Teeth Cleaning

Once your mouth is numb, we use a small dental tool to remove the tartar that’s below your gum line. If you have tartar that is difficult to reach, we’ll use an ultrasonic device. An ultrasonic device vibrates and sprays water or antibacterial mouthrinse to dislodge hardened build up from your teeth. Sometimes we also administer localized antibiotics in deep pockets if we notice signs of infection.

If your Ventura deep teeth cleaning requires multiple appointments, we’ll focus on one side or quadrant of your mouth at each appointment. After your initial deep cleaning is completed, you’ll return 6 to 8 weeks later for a re-evaluation so we can examine your gums to make sure that they’re responding appropriately and healing.

What to expect after Deep Teeth Cleaning

You’re allowed to eat and drink like normal after a Ventura deep teeth cleaning. It’s normal for your gums to feel a little sore, but this should subside within a few days. Warm salt water rinses and over-the-counter pain medications (like ibuprofen or acetaminophen) are helpful for soothing the gums after deep cleanings.

After your re-evaluation visit, we will recommend that you come in for gum maintenance visits (also called periodontal maintenance appointments (PMAs)) every 3 to 4 months. This is essential for maintaining your gum health after deep cleanings because the bacteria that cause gum disease regrow within this time frame.

How does deep teeth cleaning improve your oral health?

Tartar that builds up in the pockets located between the gums and teeth puts you at risk of gum disease. Untreated gum disease can cause a serious dental infection or even lead to tooth loss. Gum disease damages your mouth’s soft tissue and bone, eventually causing your teeth to loosen or fall out because they’re no longer held in place by your bone and gums. Deep teeth cleaning in Ventura removes this plaque and tartar so that it can’t impact the health of your gums.
