What is wisdom tooth pain?

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are located at the back areas of your upper and lower jaws. Your wisdom teeth can cause discomfort and soreness at the back of your mouth. This pain can radiate through your neck and head, leading to headaches and pain and stiffness along your jaw.

What causes Wisdom Tooth Pain?

The most common cause of wisdom tooth pain in Ventura is impacted wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth become impacted when there isn’t sufficient space for them to erupt through your gums. This causes your wisdom teeth to erupt at an angle or be unable to erupt, putting pressure on your nerves and surrounding teeth. It’s also possible for a painful cyst to form at the site of an impacted wisdom tooth.

Infection is another cause of wisdom tooth pain. Bacteria and food particles get stuck under your gum tissue, leading to a painful infection. Some instances of Ventura wisdom teeth pain occur when your wisdom teeth erupt through your gums. Your gums get thicker as you age; if your wisdom teeth erupt in your 20s, they’re likely to cause discomfort, even if you do have room for them.

How is wisdom tooth pain treated?

For wisdom tooth pain caused by an unimpacted eruption, you can use an ice pack to reduce your swelling and pain. Pain medication and numbing products may also alleviate your discomfort. If infection or impaction is causing your pain, surgery to remove your wisdom teeth is necessary. Most wisdom tooth extractions are completed using dental sedation. Once you’re relaxed, your oral surgeon removes your wisdom teeth using special tools.

What are the benefits of treating wisdom tooth pain?

There are several benefits associated with treating your wisdom tooth pain in Ventura:

You can permanently stop your wisdom tooth pain

Using surgery to treat your wisdom tooth pain is a permanent alternative for eliminating your pain and swelling. Surgery also prevents future cases of Ventura wisdom tooth pain.

It’s easier to care for your teeth

If your wisdom teeth have erupted, this can make it more difficult for you to properly floss and brush your teeth. Your wisdom teeth are difficult to reach when it’s time to brush and floss, and if your wisdom teeth have only partially erupted, they’re more likely to attract bacteria and food particles that lead to tooth decay.

Surgical treatment is a fast, efficient treatment

The surgery to remove wisdom teeth usually takes less than an hour and is a safe, routine procedure. You’re able to go home the day of your surgery, and you can resume your normal activities within a few days.
