What is wisdom tooth impaction?

Wisdom tooth impaction in Ventura occurs when your wisdom teeth don’t have enough room to break through your gums. A tooth may partially break through your gums (this is a partially impacted wisdom tooth), or it may be unable to break through the gums (known as a fully impacted wisdom tooth). We use dental x-rays and a visual examination to determine if your wisdom teeth are impacted.

What causes Wisdom Tooth Impaction?

Most wisdom tooth impaction in Ventura occurs because there isn’t enough space in the jaw to accommodate the wisdom teeth. This lack of space can cause wisdom teeth to grow in at the wrong angle, causing them to become impacted.

How is wisdom tooth impaction treated?

Ventura wisdom tooth impaction is treated by removing the wisdom teeth. Impacted wisdom teeth require a surgical procedure performed by an oral surgeon. Surgery to remove your impacted wisdom teeth is an outpatient procedure; you’ll go home the day of your surgery. Most surgeries last between 30 and 60 minutes.

You’ll receive IV sedation anesthesia to ensure you’re comfortable and pain-free during your surgery. To access the impacted tooth, a portion of your jawbone is removed, but will regrow in the site once the tooth is removed. Then, after the tooth is extracted, your gums are closed with stitches and packed with gauze.

What to expect after your surgery

It takes up to six weeks for your mouth to heal after surgery for wisdom tooth impaction in Ventura, but most people can resume their normal activities within a few days to a week. Plan on eating soft foods for about a week, and avoid smoking or using straws to reduce the risk of a painful complication known as a dry socket. You can use cold compresses and pain medication to reduce post-surgery discomfort.

What are the benefits of treating wisdom tooth impaction?

Treating wisdom tooth impaction has multiple benefits for our patients:

Reduces adverse symptoms caused by impacted wisdom teeth

When wisdom teeth are unable to erupt, they press against your gums and other teeth, causing pain, headaches, swelling, and discomfort. Extracting the wisdom teeth eliminates these issues so that you’re able to comfortably speak, bite, and chew.

Prevents your wisdom teeth from affecting your oral health

Impacted wisdom teeth are more susceptible to decay and infection that can impact your gums and teeth. Wisdom teeth that press against neighboring teeth can also push these teeth into new positions that make them more likely to experience tooth decay or gum disease.

Assists with orthodontic treatment

If you need orthodontic treatment, removing your wisdom teeth can assist creating enough space to straighten your teeth and improve your bite and jaw alignment.

TREATMENT

Most people get their wisdom teeth in their late teens or early 20s. While some wisdom teeth grow in with minimal issues, others fail to emerge normally, resulting in wisdom tooth impaction. Ventura wisdom tooth impaction requires treatment to alleviate the complications associated with this common dental condition.
